NYC Officials Are Reducing the Speed Limits on Ten Major Streets

Speed limits
New York City – A news report published on cbslocal.com states that Mayor Bill de Blasio is moving forward with plans to reduce the speed limits on approximately 45 miles of New York City roadway. New York City officials are focused on ten major roadways that are notorious for a large percentage of motor vehicle accidents in the city. For example, the city is addressing roadways such as the Van Wyck service road, Woodhaven Boulevard, and Pelham Parkway in the Bronx. City officials will change the four-mile stretch of Astoria Boulevard from 30 mph to 25 mph.
According to Department of transportation commissioner Henry Gutman, the changes will substantially impact safety in New York City.
However, Drivers from Queens have mixed reactions to the new proposal that will reduce speed limits throughout NYC. One person who commented in the news article stated that there are a lot of elderly people walking and pedestrians crossing streets, and most people are rushing to work, and a lower speed limit could save lives. Another motorist, who opposes the speed limit changes, stated that it’s important that the city’s traffic continues to flow through l, especially in the areas where the speed limits will be lowered. In general, motorists believe that 25 mph is too slow but that reducing the speed limit would be safer for pedestrians.
The Mayor’s goal is to reduce speed limits in the city’s most congested areas to solve the growing problem of fatal pedestrian accidents in New York City.
According to the Mayor, when you see pedestrian accidents on the rise, you have to do something different. He also stated that by lowering speed limits, creates more driver accountability and would likely save lives.
The news report states that the number of pedestrian deaths has climbed 58% in 2021.
Murderers are asked to pay attention to the new speed limits posted in various areas of New York City. To make sure drivers obey the new speed limits, the New York Police Department will be out in force all week long.
