According to a news report posted on cumberlink.com, the Otis elevator company has initiated a recall regarding its private residence elevators. The elevators have been in the news over the past ten years, alleging a dangerous defect that could cause serious injury and death to children.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the elevator recalls recently. The Consumer Product Safety Commission received numerous reports of severe injuries and fatalities linked to the elevators’ design flaws. Otis is recalling its private residence elevators and the CemcoLift elevators due to a flaw that enables small children to become entrapped in a small space between the interior elevator door or gate and the exterior landing door. Once a small child becomes entrapped, the child cannot open the doors, and if the elevator is called to a different floor, the child will sustain life-threatening injuries or death.
Otis has received approximately four incident reports where children have received injuries, including a fractured hip, crushed spine and abdomen, broken arms, broken feet, head trauma, and chest injuries.
The private home elevator recall affects the Otis elevators that were purchased before 2012 and CemcoLift elevators bought from 1999 to 2012. The private home elevators and parts were marketed to independent third-party contractors, but the company occasionally sold its elevators directly to consumers.
If you have one of the recalled elevators, Otis is directing you to block entry to the elevator or disable the elevator. Owners of the recalled elevators should then contact Otis to receive a free inspection. Space guards will be installed free of charge if necessary.
