NASSAU COUNTY, Long Island, New York — A Nassau County grand jury handed up indictments against a woman who allegedly caused a fatal pedestrian accident. At the same time, she was highly intoxicated and killed a 39-year-old woman and severely injured her 8-year-old son. The son watched as his mother slipped out of consciousness and then sadly died before his eyes. The 26-year-old woman who caused the deadly crash attempted to walk away from the scene of the collision. One of the Nassau County police officers responding to the accident scene prevented her from fleeing. The woman now faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted, according to NBC 4 New York.
The grand jury heard sufficient evidence to hand up several charges, including aggravated vehicular homicide, vehicular manslaughter, manslaughter, assault, and other criminal offenses. The allegations stem from a collision that happened in early February of 2020. The female driver drove on Meadowbrook Parkway at an excessively high speed. Nassau County police reported that the woman was reportedly highly intoxicated as well. The deadly crash occurred when the drunk 26-year-old plowed into the rear of Kia, carrying the 39-year-old mother and her 8-year-old son.
The powerful rear-end collision between the two vehicles sent the victim’s vehicle into and sent the Kia across all of the lanes of travel on Meadowbrook Parkway. The victim’s car flew into a tree on the side of the road. The driver was reportedly conscious immediately after the collision but began losing consciousness in the moments after the crash. The woman’s 8-year-old son, who was severely hurt himself, tried to comfort his mother. Tragically, the boy’s mother died from her injuries in the car while the boy talked with his mother. The 8-year-old sustained a broken arm and had other injuries as well.
The 26-year-old woman under indictment remains held on bail. The criminal law presumes her innocent until proven guilty. The court did not order a trial date for the case at this time.
