BROOKLYN, N.Y. — A 72-year-old woman who lives in Sunset Park remains in critical condition after the driver of a box truck ran her down. The pedestrian accident happened on Saturday, April 27, 2019, around 10:50 a.m. according to the Brooklyn Paper. The officers who responded to the scene restrained the driver of the truck and charged him with crimes relating to the incident. The investigating officers did not disclose to the media the nature or extent of the pedestrian’s injuries with the exception of noting that she was in critical condition after the accident. Police continue to investigate the crash to learn more about why the truck collided with the pedestrian.
NYPD’s Highway Collision Investigation Squad received the call to open an investigation into the crash. Officers close to the investigation report that the 72-year-old woman lived a few blocks away from where the truck hit her. Police said that the woman tried to cross Seventh Avenue from Sixth Avenue heading towards Eighth Avenue when the truck hit her. Officers refused to disclose whether the woman was walking in the crosswalk at the time of the collision.
The investigating officers said that the 67-year-old operator of the box truck caused the accident. Police allege that the 67-year-old male operator took a left-hand turn out of 55thStreet onto Seventh Avenue when he struck the victim. Emergency medical services medics arrived on scene quickly and found the woman down in the street suffering from severe trauma to her head. Medics rushed the badly injured woman to NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn.
The victim remains hospitalized. However, police did not advise the press of the victim’s prognosis for survival or for making a complete recovery. NYPD investigators charged the 67-year-old man with failing to yield to a pedestrian and not using care while driving. It was unclear whether police simply detained the man and released him with a summons or affected an arrest at the scene of the crash.
