Deadly hit and run crashes

EAST NEW YORK, BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The death of a 51-year-old man earlier this week in Brooklyn in a hit-and-run accident marks the third fatal hit-and-run crash in Brooklyn in 2019. A 25-year-old woman died in a hit-and-run accident while riding a bicycle in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn and a 27-year-old man perished in January of 2019 in a hit-and-run accident also in Brooklyn according to the Bklyner.com.  Community leaders say that the Mayor’s office needs to step up to protect Brooklyn residents and people across all five boroughs to prevent deadly pedestrian accidents.

The third fatal hit-and-run crash in which a 51-year-old man from Staten Island was run down happened on Tuesday, March 12, 2019, a few minutes before midnight. According to reports, the 51-year-old man attempted to cross Linden Boulevard headed south at Barbey Street when a 2015 Jeep Cherokee heading west on Linden Boulevard plowed into the pedestrian. The driver of the Jeep fled and ditched the SUV a few blocks away from the intersection where the crash happened at Jerome Avenue and McClancy Street. The driver ran from the parked Cherokee.

Medics transported the pedestrian to Brookdale Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Police captured the fleeing driver on Wednesday, March 13, 2019. Police charged the 43-year-old driver with leaving the scene and equipment violations.

Meanwhile, community leaders call for action from the mayor’s office. They say that the latest hit-and-run death could have been prevented if roads like Linden Boulevard were constructed correctly. It turns out that the victim was crossing where no crosswalks appear. However, community activists say that there are few crosswalks on Linden Boulevard. They also claim that Linden Boulevard is well known for speeding traffic. They further argue that Linden Boulevard, with its six lanes of traffic, is built for speed and to keep traffic flowing rather than protecting pedestrians. Consequently, the group argues, there were 190 accidents with injuries on Linden Boulevard alone since January of 2017. They say the NY DOT and elected officials need to make safety their priority.

My sister was exposed to 9/11 toxins and developed several types of cancer. She chose Parker Waichman to engage the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund and was assigned Tina Morace as her paralegal. Tina was helpful, professional and compassionate in helping us gather medical records and other important information required for the case. Tina was clear and concise in followup queries from the Fund and was quick to respond to our questions. When my sister's condition deteriorated and she passed, Tina was so thoughtful, patient and helpful when I had to address continued Fund followup questions. I will always be thankful for having Tina in our lives. She helped make my sister's last years easier in this aspect. And she was a knowledgeable friend to me, assisting in information gathering and consoling me in my loss. Thank you Parker Waichman. Thank you Tina Morace. Thank you Tina Morace.
