Hit and run accident in Suffolk
SUFFOLK COUNTY, NEW YORK – As reported in an online news article published by longisland.com, a Mattituck man without a driver’s license was arrested and charged for fleeing the scene of an accident that left a school teacher dead.
According to the Suffolk County Police, a 32-year-old Mattituck man has been arrested and is facing criminal charges for his role in causing a hit-and-run accident that resulted in the death of a 37-year-old physical education teacher and coach. The accident happened late morning to mid-day on a Sunday when the 37-year-old teacher was jogging along the shoulder of the southbound lane of Lake Avenue, north of Oak Street.
The teacher was struck by a 2014 Nissan sedan driven by the 32-year-old Mattituck man. The Mattituck man fled the scene of the accident, and the 37-year-old teacher was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident from his injuries by a physician assistant from the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.
The 32-year-old Mattituck man was caught when police spotted him driving his damaged Nissan on the Long Island Expressway near Exit 69 in Manorville. A 7thprecinct officer pulled the Mattituck man over and arrested him. The man is now facing charges of (1) leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, and (2) unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. The man was arraigned at First District Court in Islip.
The police are asking anyone with information to come forward. A specific cause has not been released for how the hit-and-run accident happened and why the driver fled the scene of the accident. The 37-year-old man struck and killed while jogging along Lake Avenue was a physical education teacher as well as both a middle school and high school coach. The man is survived by his wife and children.
