MANHATTAN, New York — 1010WINS reported that a woman was badly hurt when a lounge chair fell from a balcony over 100 feet above her and landed on her head. The flying wooden lounge chair knocked the woman unconscious for approximately ten minutes. She also sustained a severe laceration on the head from the airborne seat. EMS took her to Bellevue Hospital, where she was admitted in stable condition. There was no word on the cause for the chair flying off of the balcony. However, wind gusts reaching 40 miles per hour could have played a significant role.
The 23-year-old woman walking along the sidewalk in front of 15 Union Square West is lucky to be alive after a large wooden lounge chair took flight and crashed down on her head on Saturday at around 1:30 in the afternoon. The heavy chair plummeted off of a balcony on the 12th floor of 15 Union Square West and slammed into the woman’s head. The chair bounced off of a car parked along the curb and then came to rest in a mangled heap against the building.
The flying chair rendered the woman unconscious. First responders said that the woman’s head sustained a cut from the chair as well. Witnesses at the scene said that the woman regained consciousness ten minutes after being knocked out. The woman began screaming frantically upon regaining her senses and complained of severe pain. First responders fitted her with a cervical collar, placed her on a backboard, and transported her to Bellevue Hospital.
A black sedan was damaged by the falling chair as well. A photograph taken of the damage to the rear and trunk of a Dodge Charger shows a considerable dent as if the wind drove the lounge chair forcefully into the car.
Police have not identified the chair’s owner, nor is there any word on whether someone came forward to claim ownership of the airborne furniture.
