Man from Brooklyn dies
BROOKLYN, NY – According to Patch.com, a man who was struck by a pick-up truck died from his injuries weeks after the incident. The victim, Ebenezer Edwards, 74, was hit by a 2017 Dodge Ram at about 10:30 in the morning on December 10, 2018. The crash took place on Flatbush Avenue.
Edwards was conscious when emergency responders arrived at the scene of the crash but had sustained severe head trauma. Responders brought the victim to the Kings County Hospital where he passed away on Friday, December 28, 2018.
The driver of the pick-up truck, a 44-year-old man, stayed at the scene and was not charged in relation to the accident.
The police are still investigating the crash.
In 2017, New York City experienced fewer pedestrian deaths than in any year ever recorded. The city has worked to increase pedestrian safety through a number of methods including better street designs, lower speed limits, and stricter enforcement of traffic laws. Last year, 221 people died in traffic accidents in New York City. As of late December of 2018, 196 people died in traffic incidents, indicating the city will likely continue its downward trend. While the work has shown improvements, the city’s goal is to have eliminated traffic fatalities by the year 2024.
While overall deaths are down, the number of pedestrians killed in the city in 2018 is higher than the total for 2017. There were also more motorcycle fatalities in the city.
Mayor Bill de Blasio is still pushing the plan forward and reminding the city that even as numbers show improvements, the city cannot tolerate a single traffic fatality.
