SUNSET PARK, NY – According to Abc7ny.com, a man sustained critical injuries when he was hit by a vehicle in Brooklyn on Monday, January 14, 2019, at about 1 in the morning. The driver who hit the victim then fled the scene.
The victim was identified as Fernando Trejo, 27. Trejo was found lying in the street injured after the crash. Trejo was taken to the NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn where his condition was described a critical. Reports indicate that the victim will likely survive.
The police are now seeking surveillance videos from the area that might show what transported at the time of the crash.
The victim’s family is asking that someone come forward with information about what happened to their loved one. The victim’s brother, Erick Trejo, says that the family wants the person responsible to face justice.
Erick stated that his brother was capable of hearing his family but could not yet speak.
The police are seeking any information about the crash. Witnesses or people with information about the incident are being asked to contact the police department’s Crime Stoppers Hotline.
Hit-and-run crashes are a problem for New York City where Mayor Bill de Blasio has been working to prevent traffic accident fatalities. While the city’s efforts through Vision Zero have been successful in lowering the number of motor vehicle-related deaths in the city, the number of hit-and-run crashes has remained high, and the arrest rate for this crime has remained low. In part, this could be because resources for these investigations are limited. The city is implementing an early alert system which requests help from the public in providing information immediately following serious hit-and-run crashes.
