Countdown red light cameras
STATEN ISLAND, NY – According to Silive.com, the city’s streets are being updated to improve pedestrian safety. The New York City Council has approved a bill which requires that any intersection with a red-light camera be equipped with pedestrian countdown clocks.
The city installed red light cameras at the intersections that are considered the city’s most dangerous. Pedestrian countdown clocks have shown to make intersections safer for pedestrians. The installation of these clocks can increase protection for pedestrians at intersections that have already been deemed dangerous. The improvement will likely be able to reduce the number of crashes, injuries and traffic-related fatalities.
Pedestrian countdown clocks display the remaining seconds before the traffic light changes. These clocks are already used at about 50 percent of the city’s intersections. The law will go into effect in 90 days and will apply to existing intersections and to those intersections that include red light cameras in the future.
Councilman Steven Matteo authored the bill and said that it is basically common sense to include these devices at an intersection that was deemed dangerous enough to have a red-light camera installed. The Matteo is now working on a bill that would require the Department of Transportation to install countdown clocks at every signalized intersection within the city.
New York City has effectively reduced the number of traffic-related deaths that take place in the city each year. Since the implementation of the Vision Zero initiative, the overall numbers have been continuously declining. However, the gains are not uniform throughout the city, and the number of pedestrians killed in NYC in 2018 was slightly higher than in 2017, though the total number of vehicle-related deaths did go down.
