NEW YORK CITY, NY – According to a news report posted on abc7ny.com, New York City has seen an increase of 23 traffic-related deaths in 2020. Although there have been 21 fewer pedestrian accident fatalities this year in New York City, there has been an increase in the number of fatal accidents involving bicycles, motorcycles, and motor vehicles.
Mayor Bill de Blasio stated that although Vision Zero has effectively reduced the total number of pedestrian accidents, there have been too many pedestrian accidents in New York City. Mayor De Blasio believes that by operating at its maximum potential the city’s speed cameras 24/7, many more lives could be saved. Mayor Bill de Blasio’s proposal to turn on the speed cameras 24/7 is a part of the Mayor’s Vision Zero program.
Currently, the speed cameras that are located around schools operate from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. However, the most dangerous accidents typically occur during the off-hours. One of the most serious issues concerning pedestrian safety is the increased number of street racing incidents in residential neighborhoods and school zones. The number of complaints has escalated since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.
Mayor de Blasio also announced that the NYPD “would be out in force” to stop and arrest drunk drivers. The Mayor acknowledged that the coronavirus pandemic and holiday season had led to a sharp increase in alcohol consumption.
NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea stated that the holiday season is always a dangerous time of year for drunk drivers to keep the roadways safe. He said that the NYPD would be heavily enforcing DWI laws and citing speeders because no one wants to endure a tragedy.
