STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.— A pedestrian in Tompkinsville remains in stable condition after he was struck by a sedan. The initial reports following the accident suggested that the pedestrian victim was listed in critical condition, but he has stabilized according to silive.com. The sedan versus pedestrian crash occurred at the intersection of St. Marks Place and Victory Boulevard. The preliminary accident reports filed by New York police officers suggest that a large brown Buick four-door sedan struck the pedestrian. The pedestrian flipped violently onto the hood of the sedan and crushed the windshield. Witnesses say the man went airborne and crashed to the ground. At least one witness believed the man did not survive the crash.
The first responding officers to the crash called for assistance from the Collision Investigation Squad. The accident investigators were canceled before arrival. An NYPD spokesperson told silive.com that the man was not in critical condition when he arrived at Richmond University Medical Center. Notwithstanding, detectives from the local precinct responded to interview the driver of the Buick and the witnesses on scene. No criminal charges have issued to this juncture.
Each driver who takes the road holds a responsibility to everyone else using the road to drive safely. The duty of care extends to pedestrians, especially. Motorists must take care to avoid crashing into a pedestrian. The stakes for the pedestrian are too high to drive without anticipating a pedestrian is lurking behind every parking car and ready to lunge out into the street at every corner. A person walking enjoys the right of way when crossing at intersections when they have the light. Even if they do not have the light, motorists should stop and allow them to cross. Drivers must be alert for the potential that a pedestrian might unwittingly step into the street at any time. Therefore, drivers should be watching for inattentive pedestrians constantly. Otherwise, the results will be devastating for the pedestrian and the driver.
