School Bus Accident in Brooklyn
MIDWOOD, BROOKLYN – According to an online news report posted on pix11.com, police are continuing an accident investigation concerning a school bus running over a 15-year-old student. The news report states that the school bus driver left the scene of the collision.
Friends and family members of the 15-year-old student are grieving her tragic death. A veteran police investigator reported that he is “getting to the bottom” of what transpired to determine if the fatal crash was a serious crime. The collision occurred at approximately 7:55 AM last Monday. The victim was walking in a crosswalk on Bedford Avenue by Avenue P when the school bus rode around a corner and collided with her.
The news report states that the alleged driver, a 55-year-old man, faces criminal charges of failing to yield to a pedestrian and failing to use due care while driving. According to the report, these criminal charges resulted in a desk appearance ticket.
People close to the victim stated that they wanted to see more severe criminal charges filed against the school bus driver.
Ralph Cilento, adjunct professor of law and a retired NYPD lieutenant commander of detectives, stated that the incident is a great tragedy and that these cases take a long time to investigate. He also stated that more serious criminal charges such as “leaving the scene of an accident without reporting it,” necessitate a deep and meticulous investigation. According to Cilento, an analysis of the driver’s electronics must be performed because it is possible the driver didn’t know he had run over the victim. For example, the investigators will look to see if the driver text messaged someone and admitted to the collision.
