Pedestrian accidents are a common occurrence in the United States where 6,000 people died after being struck by vehicles last year. The previous year, 2016, about 6,000 people died in pedestrian crashes as well. Pedestrian crashes are more likely at night. Likely, visibility plays a role in causing these accidents, but another frequent contributing factor in these accidents is alcohol consumption. In about one in three fatal pedestrian crashes, the driver or the pedestrian was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the occurrence. In a higher percent of these accidents, the pedestrian is the one who had a blood alcohol concentration that was higher than the legal limit, which is .08 percent.
Another major factor is the speed at which a vehicle is traveling. People are rarely killed by vehicles that were traveling at or below 20 miles per hour. The chances of surviving decrease as the vehicle’s speed increases.
