TOBAY BEACH, Long Island, New York — The driver of a Lamborghini lost control over the Italian sports car, crossed a grassy median, and slammed into the front of a sports utility vehicle heading in the opposite direction. According to a report filed by abc7ny.com, the first responders who raced to the scene of the head-on crash, which occurred on the Ocean Parkway in the village of Tobay Beach, said that one person sustained severe injuries in the crash. The police did not identify which car the severely injured person rode. The initial police reports did indicate that the Lamborghini drove westbound on Ocean Parkway and left the lane of travel before crossing all lanes and then slamming into a white SUV driving east on Ocean Parkway. Officers continue to investigate.
High-speed accidents are extremely dangerous. Accident victims, who were innocently riding in another car or who were passengers of the speeding driver, sustained brutal and life-changing injuries if the innocent victim survives the crash. Unfairly, the person who suffers the brunt of a high-speed collision is the person driving at a slower speed and obeying the traffic laws. Even though cars have become much safer with improvements to airbags, crumple zones, lane departure warnings, and other safety features designed to reduce the chances a person would get severely hurt in a crash, a high-speed crash impairs the safety systems’ ability to protect the passenger.
About 30 percent of all motor vehicle fatalities could be attributed to speeding. Although high-speed crashes can occur within the confines of a city or town, highways and interstates allow motorists to reach speeds that are hazardous to life and limb. Speeders also tend to drive recklessly by weaving in and out of traffic, changing lanes, aggressively driving, tailgating, and failing to yield. All of these factors, in combination with traveling at excessive speeds, can kill or maim in the blink of an eye.
