Fatal pedestrian accidents have reached a 25-year high with 6,000 people killed in both 2017 and 2016. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), the numbers seem to be staying steady and no long increasing dramatically, but they are remaining steady at a high number of deaths.
While pedestrians are still being killed in high numbers, other types of traffic deaths are declining. Between the years 2007 and 2016, the number of pedestrians killed across the country rose by 27 percent. During the same period, the number of other types of traffic-related deaths declined by 14 percent. Pedestrians are not a larger percentage of overall traffic deaths.
One part of the problem is simply an increase in the number of vehicles on the road. Lower gas prices and a strengthening economy have led to more people driving. Another theory often cited is that both drivers and pedestrians are increasingly distracted by technology.
Legalized marijuana has also been postulated as another cause for the higher number of pedestrians being killed in recent years. The theory is supported by an increase in fatalities in the states that legalized marijuana for recreational purposes.
