The most catastrophic accident last year involved the Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 Max that killed 157 victims in March of 2019. At the very end of the year, the death toll rose by twelve when a Bek Air Fokker 100 crashed while taking off from an airport in Kazakhstan. One of the questions many people have about air travel safety is whether Boeing’s 737 Max aircraft will be approved to fly again. It appears that these planes will likely be able to take to the sky at some point later this year.
Commercial airlines saw the number of deadly crashes drop to .18 per every million flights. The number of deadly crashes indicates the need to continue to develop safe aircraft and to thoroughly train flight crews. While the number of deaths dropped in 2019 compared to 2018, fewer people died in 2017. Only thirteen fatalities were reported in 2017.
The report only looked at the number of fatal crashes involving large planes that are primarily used in commercial aviation. Private planes and helicopters were not included in the data set.
General aviation is where the vast majority of plane crashes occur. In fact, 94 percent of all plane crash deaths take place in general aviation. The reason is often a pilot error, though bad weather is another common factor. According to some analysts, the risk of dying in a plane crash is 272 times higher for those flying any type of general aviation as compared to a commercial flight.
