According to a news article posted on hstoday.us, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has issued its 2020 Safety Report and published its information concerning the commercial airline industry’s safety performance for 2020. The report announced that the total number of aviation accidents decreased from “52 in 2019 to 38 in 2020,” and the total number of fatal aviation accidents fell from 8 in 2019 to 5 in 2020. The “all accident rate” was 1.71 crashes per million flights. The 2020 “all accident rate” was higher than the 5-year (2016-2020) average rate of 1.38 accidents per million flights.
The International Air Transport Association’s report also stated that with an “aviation fatality risk” of 0.13 for all air travel. Statistically, a person would have to fly every single day for 461 years before enduring an accident with one or more fatalities. Also, a passenger would have to fly every day for over 20,900 years to be killed in an aviation accident.
The report also noted that for the first time in over 15 years, there were no Loss of Control Inflight (LOC-I) crashes. Loss of Control Inflight (LOC-I) accidents account for the greatest number of fatalities since 2016. This lack of a single Loss of Control Inflight (LOC-I) accident was positive news.
