Daimler Recalling Over 180,000 Freightliner Cascadia Tractor-Trailer Trucks Due Antilock Brake Defect Posing a Risk of an Accident

PORTLAND, OR – According to an online news article posted on TheTrucker.com, Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) is recalling over 164,000 Freightliner Cascadia tractor-trailer trucks in the United States and another 18,774 trucks in Canada. The recall was initiated due to an issue with a defective antilock brake component that could lead to the truck to pull to the right. The Freightliner Cascadia truck recall affects 2017-2021 year-model vehicles built within March 8, 2016, and June 25, 2020.

Transport Canada and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) published safety recall press releases on July 2, 2020. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall number is 20V-390, and Transport Canada’s recall number is 2020305.

The defective part in the DTNA’s manufacturer recall is #FL-855. The part is described as Wabco USA’s solenoid ABS modulator valve. The part number is WAB472 196 025 0. It is believed the part is affected by chemical corrosion.

The recall states that certain truck parts fail due to chemical corrosion, and this corrosion affects the functionality of the single brake modulator valve. This causes a slow release of brakes on one side of the truck and could lead to a brake pull. Brake pulls can make an unexpected shift in the truck’s direction, increasing the risk of a motor vehicle crash.

Currently, there are no reports of accidents and injuries because of the defect. DTNA intends to inform dealerships and truck owners August 30, 2020 by USPS first-class mail. All repairs of the recalled trucks will be performed by DTNA authorized service facilities.
