2022 Volkswagen GTIs and Golf Rs Recalled
According to caranddriver.com, Volkswagen is recalling more than 3,400 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI and 865 Golf Rs cars due to a loose engine cover that can potentially melt and cause a dangerous engine fire. The recall notice states that the cover can become loose. The National Highway Transportation Administration states that the cover becomes loose during certain driving maneuvers with high accelerating forces.
Volkswagen is removing the engine covers from the recalled vehicles until a new cover is redesigned.
The sale of Volkswagen’s eighth-generation Volkswagen GTI and Golf R began toward the last quarter of last year. In the recall notice filed on March 16, 2022, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a recall for over 4,000 2022 GTI and Golf R vehicles due to the engine cover melting when touching the powertrain. This issue creates a risk of a dangerous engine bay fire. The fire could cause a serious auto accident with injuries or death.
The updated recall announcement from March 21, 2022, states that more than 4,200 affected motor vehicles. Although the engine covers potentially become loose only during certain driving maneuvers, this is a probable behavior when driving these sportscar Volkswagen hatchbacks. The NHTSA warns that when the cover melts from its fixation points, drivers will detect a burning odor smell coming from the vehicle’s engine bay.
Once Volkswagen has designed the improved cover, owners will be bringing their vehicles back to the Volkswagen dealership and have the cover installed at no charge. Beginning in February 2022, Volkswagen has started building Golf Rs and GTIs without engine covers. Volkswagen Golf Rs and GTIs owners of recalled vehicles will begin receiving recall announcements from Volkswagen starting on May 13, 2022.
