Honda and Acura Sticky Steering Accidents

Earlier this year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) initiated an investigation into the 2022 and 2023 Honda Civic models following 145 complaints from owners reporting instances of “sticky steering” and increased steering effort. Recent developments indicate that this investigation has now expanded to encompass a significantly larger number of vehicles.

The initial inquiry focused on approximately 238,000 Honda Civics. However, in its latest report issued on Friday, the NHTSA revealed that the investigation has broadened its scope, now encompassing more than 530,000 Honda and Acura vehicles. The affected models include the 2022 and 2023 Honda Civic, the 2023 Honda CR-V, and the 2023 Acura Integra. This expansion was prompted by a notable surge in complaints, with the NHTSA receiving a staggering 1,300 reports and identifying at least 14 accidents linked to the steering issue.

What’s particularly concerning is that 11 of these crashes resulted in the loss of steering control and a departure from the roadway. Two of the incidents were attributed to drivers overcorrecting, and tragically, three injuries have been reported as a result of these accidents. The NHTSA’s findings revealed that these incidents were more prevalent during the winter months and often occurred after the vehicle had been driven in a straight line for an extended period to warm up the car and its components.

However, it’s essential to clarify that this investigation has not yet escalated to a recall. Honda has acknowledged the problem, attributing it to a manufacturing issue within the steering gear unit. The production process inadvertently created conditions that increased internal stress, leading to wear and deformation of the gears inside the steering component. Additionally, the NHTSA identified inconsistencies in lubrication throughout the gear, which could explain the temporary spikes in steering effort.

In response, Honda has instructed its dealers to replace the electronic power steering gearbox to rectify the manufacturing defect. Nevertheless, the NHTSA will continue its investigation, advancing to an engineering analysis. Should this analysis confirm the presence of a defect, it may trigger a formal recall.

Filing a Lawsuit for Damages in a Product Liability Case

In cases involving faulty automotive components, such as the “sticky steering” issue affecting Honda and Acura vehicles, victims may consider pursuing a lawsuit to seek compensation for accident injuries caused by the defect. Filing a lawsuit in a product liability case can be a complex endeavor, and having an attorney to guide you through the process is crucial.

The Lawsuit Process:

The lawsuit process, a legal journey undertaken by individuals seeking justice and compensation for various grievances, is a multifaceted and intricate path that requires careful navigation. Whether you are pursuing a personal injury claim, a product liability case, or any other legal matter, understanding the essential steps and the critical role of legal representation is paramount. The following is the step-by-step process of filing a lawsuit.

  1. Consultation with an Attorney: The initial step is to consult with a skilled product liability attorney who can assess the particulars of your case. They will explain your legal rights, determine the validity of your claim, and outline the available legal options.
  2. Investigation and Evidence Collection: Your attorney will conduct a comprehensive investigation to gather evidence regarding the defect and its impact on your situation. This may involve obtaining medical records, vehicle maintenance records, expert testimonies, and more to substantiate your case.
  3. Filing the Lawsuit: If your attorney deems your case strong enough, they will proceed to file a lawsuit on your behalf against the responsible parties, which may include the automaker, parts manufacturer, or others in the supply chain.
  4. Discovery Phase: During this stage, both sides exchange relevant information and evidence. This could include depositions, document requests, and the identification of expert witnesses.
  5. Negotiation and Settlement: Your attorney will engage in negotiations with the opposing party or parties to reach a fair settlement. This negotiation process aims to secure compensation for your losses without going to trial.
  6. Trial: If a settlement cannot be reached, your case may proceed to trial. Your attorney will present your case before a judge and jury, offering evidence and arguments to establish liability and the extent of your damages.
  7. Verdict and Damages: If the court finds in your favor, you may be awarded damages. These can encompass medical expenses, lost income, pain and suffering, and other losses related to the steering defect.

Potential Damages:

In a product liability lawsuit arising from injuries caused by a defective automotive component, victims may be eligible to recover various damages, including:

  • Medical Expenses: Compensation for past and future medical bills associated with the injuries.
  • Lost Wages: Reimbursement for income lost due to the injuries, including potential future earnings.
  • Pain and Suffering: Damages for physical and emotional distress resulting from the injuries.
  • Punitive Damages: In cases of extreme negligence or willful misconduct, punitive damages may be awarded to punish the responsible parties and deter future wrongdoing.
