DETRIOT, Mich. — The Honda Motor Company announced its plans to recall 94,000 newer model vehicles because the teeth on the timing chain could break. According to Michigan Live, the recall encompasses both the Honda line and the automaker’s luxury line, Acura. Honda warned its customers that the chances of a crash escalate if the timing chain breaks when the car is in motion. The teeth on the timing chain can break without warning to the operator. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA, is involved with Honda’s recall campaign and in monitoring the company’s progress.
The affected cars are from recent model years. The recall includes the 2018 and 2019 Acura MDX as well as the Honda Pilot. Additionally, the 2019 Acura RLX, RLX Sport Hybrid, TLX are included along with the 2019 Honda Odyssey and Honda Ridgeline autos. The NHTSA reportedly said that manufacturing records from suppliers of the timing belt lots intended for production were manufactured with a defect. This defect could cause the one or more teeth on the timing belt to break. A break in the timing belt will cause the car to stall and cannot be restarted. The supplier produced the timing belts in large quantities. However, the NHTSA and Honda can trace the defective lots, thereby identified all of the potentially affected cars.
The NHTSA received several complaints reporting broken timing belts. Honda told the NHTSA that it received 15 warranty claims and 15 field reports concerning this problem. Honda representatives said that the company is not aware of any injuries or extensive property damage stemming from the broken timing belts.
Honda said that consumers would begin receiving notification of the recall by mail June 1. The recall notification will include information about the problem and what steps a consumer should take to repair their vehicle. Honda will perform the repairs and provide any necessary parts free of charge.
