According to a news report posted on TheDriven.io, Hyundai and Kia have initiated a recall of their all-electric Ioniq 5 and EV6 crossovers. The recall involves a software glitch that can cause the affected motor vehicles to roll while correctly parked. The recall announcement concerns 578 Ioniq 5s and 315 EV6s. A software problem with the affected vehicles’ Shift Control Unit can cause the parking pawl to fail. This can cause the vehicle to roll away even while the vehicle’s gearshift is in the parked position.
Kia and Hyundai stated that the recalled vehicles could move from their parked position when unattended, causing a serious accident with property damage, injuries, or death.
Kia is urging EV6 owners to contact their closest authorized dealer to have their Shift Control Unit software updated at no charge.
Hyundai is asking affected Ioniq 5 owners to contact their local authorized Hyundai Blue Drive dealership to have the Shift Control Unit software updated at no charge.
Kia’s EV6 is the auto manufacturer’s first ground-up electric vehicle and is based on the e-GMP platform that was introduced in 2022. The Ioniq 5. was first introduced back in 2021 and is also built on the same platform.
A Hyundai spokesperson stated that the issue would be corrected on any unsold units prior to their delivery to their new owners.
