Toyota & Subaru Tire Hub Bolt Recall

According to a news report posted on theregister.com, both Toyota and Subaru have issued recalls of certain electronic vehicle models because the tires might fall off. Toyota stated that “all of the hub bolts” might become loosened even “after low-mileage use.” Subaru and Toyota are recalling thousands of their electric vehicles because the hub defects could cause the affected vehicles to shed tires due to self-loosening hub bolts resulting in severe accidents with injuries or deaths.

Toyota’s recall affects 2,700 2023 bZ4X all-electric SUVs. Subaru’s recall affected all-electric Solterras. The two motor vehicles were developed jointly between the automakers. This is why the two motor vehicle manufacturers have identical flaws.

According to Japan’s auto safety regulating body, the hub bolts can loosen when the vehicle makes sharp turns and brakes. It is not known if auto accidents have occurred due to the flaw. In Toyota’s recall notice, the hub bolts might even loosen “after low-mileage use.” Toyota is investigating the cause of the problem and is trying to identify which driving conditions can cause the issue.

Subaru has issued its recall of approximately 2,600 Solterras. Toyota is urging all owners to park their recalled vehicles until the matter has been remedied. Toyota stated that once a remedy is available, an authorized Toyota dealer will tow the vehicle to the dealership and give the affected owners loaner car at no charge until their vehicles are fixed.

Toyota’s bZ4X electric vehicle was supposed to be the company’s big reentry into the electronic vehicle market. In 2014, Toyota discontinued its RAV4 EV, its only electric vehicle. Toyota President Akio Toyoda stated that Toyota planned to sell 30 BEV models (the bZ4X would be the premier vehicle in the series of electric vehicles. The line would be fully available by 2030. The bZ4X has only been available for the past few months and this recall could be bad for the automaker.

GlobalData Automotive Editor David Legget stated that the recall should be a huge disappointment for Toyota. The company has been under tremendous pressure to move forward with electric vehicles for a long time. Legget stated that the recall did not have anything to do with the car’s electric powertrain. So damage to the car maker’s reputation may not harm Toyota’s sales if the issue is corrected quickly.
