Bicycle handlebar
According to a safety warning press release issued by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), children and adults riding bicycles need to be cautious of an increased risk of impalement injuries or deaths. The implement hazard can occur when the bike’s metal handlebar ends are exposed due to defective manufacturing or wear.
The CPSC has received several reports of impalement fatalities, and the agency states that this problem has resulted in at least 2,000 emergency department visits from 2000 and 2019. One tragic death involved a 6-year-old child. The CPSC states that the other five fatal impalement accidents involved a 50-year-old man, a 41-year-old man, and two children ages 11 and 7. According to the CPSC, impalement injuries and deaths can occur when children and adults fall from their bicycles onto handlebars that can get twisted during the fall.
CPSC is recommending that parents and adult cyclists periodically examine their bicycles for this deadly hazard and ensure that the grips are in good condition. Metal handlebar ends must always be covered by either protective rubber or plastic handlebar grips. The CPSC also recommends that parents and adult bicyclists replace their bicycle handgrips once the grips begin to show signs of wear or when the handlebar ends are exposed. Handgrips are vital in the prevention of these types of personal injuries and deaths. Handgrips are easily purchased at big-box stores that sell bicycles, bicycle shops, and online.
