Cyclist killed in St. Petersburg

ST. PETERSBURG, FL – According to Wfla.com, a man riding a bicycle was struck by a vehicle on Thursday, January 10, 2019, at about 7:20 in the evening. The victim was hit by a Nissan Altima and died from his injuries.

The crash took place on 64th Street South.

The police have not released the identity of the man killed in the crash.

Florida has the worst record when it comes to collisions involving bikes and cars. The Sunshine State is well suited for cycling with warm weather year-round. However, the state has done little in the way of providing infrastructure for cyclists. Cities such as Memphis, Tennessee have installed more protected bike lanes than the entire state of Florida.

While cycling is still popular in Florida, people on bikes often feel that they are putting themselves at the mercy of drivers. With many drivers being distracted, careless, speeding, or even drunk, cyclists are often put into a vulnerable position.

Fortunately, Florida is making plans to improve the situation for cyclists. The state plans to install many miles of protected bike lanes in upcoming years. With more people choosing to bike in the state, the improvements are welcomed, but will likely take too long for many cyclists. It is important for drivers to remember to share the road with cyclists and to give them space when passing them (three feet as is required by state law). It is also important for cyclists to take steps to ensure their own safety, such as wearing bright clothes and reflective gear, and of course, always using a properly fitted helmet.
