Beach road cycling accident
FLORIDA – According to News-press.com, a cyclist was killed when two vehicles crashed into one another causing one car to veer onto the sidewalk along Bonita Beach Road where it struck the victim. The cyclist was identified as a 65-year-old man from Warwick, New York.
The cyclist was declared dead at the scene of the crash. The Florida Highway Patrol stated that a 2012 Honda CRV Driven 72-year-old Steven Hodge was involved in a collision with a 1992 Chevy CK 1500 pickup driven by a 27-year-old man. Both vehicles were traveling east just before 2:30 in the afternoon when Hodge changed lanes into the path of Strickler. Honda hit the Chevy, and the Honda drove over the curb onto the sidewalk where he hit the cyclist and then struck a tree.
Hodge and a passenger in the Honda were both injured in the collision. Strickler did not suffer any injuries in the crash.
The accident is still under investigation.
Florida is one of the most dangerous states in the country for cyclists. The weather makes cycling a year-round activity, but the streets are mostly designed for vehicle traffic, and not much protection is in place for other people using the roads.
The state has taken some steps to improve road safety for cyclists and pedestrians and has pledged to carry out additional safety projects including installing bike lanes along many of Florida’s roads.
While roads can be designed to provide extra safety for cyclists and pedestrians, drivers still must exhibit caution and stay alert when driving. The vast majority of vehicle accidents are the result of human error.
