Hit and run accident in NYC
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK – As reported in an online news article published by nyc.streetsblog.org, New York City Police are looking for a cyclist believed to have killed a Harlem pedestrian in a hit-and-run accident.
According to the New York City Police Department (NYPD), a 60-year-old Harlem man was struck and killed by a cyclist in a late morning accident. The accident happened in a dedicated bicycle lane at the intersection of Sixth Avenue and 23rdStreet. The cyclist allegedly continued pedaling after striking the pedestrian, who was transported to Bellevue Hospital where he later died from his injuries.
The location of the hit-and-run pedestrian accident is the same location of the accident involving a truck and bicycle messenger that ended in the bicycle messenger’s death. The 60-year-old Harlem man is the second person to sustain fatal injuries at the intersection of Sixth Avenue and 23rdstreet and the 62ndpedestrian killed in an accident in 2019.
According to the news article, the death of the 60-year-old pedestrian may spark backlash and criticism from drivers and media outlets that claim cyclists are “out of control.” However, cyclists are typically not to blame for causing accidents that involve pedestrians – drivers are still overwhelmingly responsible for many pedestrian accidents, many of which end in fatal injuries.
Overall, very few pedestrians are killed by cyclists as compared to the number of pedestrians killed by automobiles. According to the Department of Transportation, since 2012, 7 New York City pedestrians were struck and killed by cyclists while 1,008 pedestrians were struck and killed by drivers. The annual death toll of pedestrians struck and killed by cyclists is, on average, less than 1 while the annual death toll of pedestrians struck and killed by drivers is, on average, 138.
