NEW YORK – According to the dailyvoice.com, a man from Warwick, New York died in a car crash in Florida on Monday, February 18, 2019, at about 2:30 in the afternoon.
The 65-year-old cyclist was riding on a sidewalk when he was hit by the 2012 Honda CRV that was operated by a 72-year-old man from PeeWee Valley, Kentucky. The Honda was involved in a collision with a 1992 Chevy pickup truck that was being driven by a 27-year-old man from Fort Meyers, Florida.
The drivers were both heading east at the time of the crash.
The cyclist died at the crash scene.
Reports indicate that the Honda changed lanes and the two vehicles collided. After jumping the curb and hitting the cyclist, the Honda then struck a tree.
While we like to believe that we are safe when walking or biking on a sidewalk, many accidents that cause pedestrian deaths to take place on sidewalks. In fact, about 10 percent of people who are struck by cars are hit while they are “off-road.”
Drivers often jump curbs because of crashes or losing control of their vehicles. Few pedestrian walkways provide any protection from this type of scenario.
People are often surprised by the fact that the drivers who jump curbs and hit and even kill pedestrians are often not charged with anything serious. The penalties are often minor or non-existent, which can cause families of victims a great deal of pain.
Finally, many places are starting to move in the direction of trying to protect pedestrians and cyclists from vehicles and ending the cultural acceptance of vehicle-related injuries and deaths.
