Man severely injured in Staten Island
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — New York City Police Department accident reconstruction detectives began investigating a bicycle accident that left the 47-year-old bicycle rider severely injured. NYPD officers and EMS responded to the scene located at Wigham Street and Maryland Avenue at 3:09 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23, 2019, according to SILIVE.com. The initial reports from the NYPD suggest that the bicycle rider drove into a cordoned-off construction area and struck his head after flying off of the bike. Police say no other vehicles were involved in the incident and continue to work to figure out what happened and why. No one has been charged in the bicycle accident.
According to the latest reports available from SILIVE.com, the 47-year-old bicyclist sustained severe head trauma in the crash, despite wearing a bike helmet. SILIVE.com reports that the man involved is a resident of the area in which the accident happened. Police say he rode his bike into a roped-off construction zone and flipped over. He landed on a steel construction plate and may have struck his head on wood beams that were on the ground as well. He may have fallen head-first on to the construction equipment.
Police say that the man riding the bike rode north on Maryland Avenue. He passed the intersection with Wigham Street and rode into the construction area. The construction area is on Maryland Avenue. EMS rushed the man to Staten Island University Avenue, where he remains in critical condition.
Photographs of the scene show a discarded bike helmet a few feet away from a pool of blood. A backpack is next to the pool of blood as well. The construction area appeared to be well demarcated by construction tape and saw horses. There was a hat found at the scene that seems to be saturated with blood. The bicycle which the victim was riding is visible in the photos as well and appears to be in good condition.
