Autism Spectrum Disorders

Children born with Autism Spectrum Disorders differ from non-ASD children who tend to be very social and interactive with others. Children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders tend to have lifelong challenges understanding human interaction and becoming involved in traditional social situations. Though not really the case, children with an Autism Spectrum Disorders appear indifferent to others and appear to prefer solitude, resisting attention. Research indicates that these children are actually very attached to their parents.

Parents and other family members are often confused and shattered when a family member with Autism Spectrum Disorder appears detached, seems to lack empathy, rejects signs of affection, and seems unable to read those social cues that are an integral part of interacting with others. Some children with Autism Spectrum Disorders have emotion control issues and can be disruptive, aggressive, and destructive, even self-destructive. Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders may lack critical communication and sensory skills; might have oversensitivity to certain sounds; might be mentally retarded or suffer from Fragile X syndrome (a form of mental retardation); might suffer from seizures; or might be prone to tuberous sclerosis (benign tumors in the brain and other organs).

Babies and children with Autism Spectrum Disorder:

  • Do not babble, point, or make significant gestures by the time they are one-year-old, have not spoken by 16 months of age, and/or have not combined two words by the time they tune they reach the age of two.
  • Do not respond to their name.
  • Lack language or social skills, exhibit poor eye contact, or appear to be hearing impaired.
  • Do not understand how to play with toys, ;will obsessively line up toys or objects, and/or becomes attached to one toy or object.
  • Do not smile.

A recent Harvard School of Public Health study revealed that the use of Clomid was linked to increased risks for congenital anomalies. A U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study also found that Clomid was linked to a wide array of birth defects. Paxil, Zoloft, Prozac, Celexa, Lexapro, and other SSRI antidepressants have been associated with increased risks for birth defects when taken during pregnancy. Other studies have linked SSRIs to Autism Spectrum Disorders, with some studies suggesting an association with abnormalities in serotonin levels and serotoninergic pathways, which might be a factor in autism.
