Fisherman Still Missing Off Coast of L.I.
POINT LOOKOUT, Long Island, N.Y. — A boating accident off the coast of Long Island killed the driver of the boat. Two people survived the harrowing event. However, one man remains missing and is presumed deceased. According to ABC 7 NY, the man lost at sea is a 65-year-old man from Farmingdale. Officials provided a physical description of the man. They described the gear he was wearing when he was violently thrown overboard. The man who died was also from Farmingdale. The two survivors who were saved from the waters by boaters from another vessel suffered from hypothermia and sustained additional injuries. The joint investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Tragedy struck in the waters off of Jones Beach inlet Saturday. Around 10:00 a.m., Nassau County Police detectives say that a 22-foot Angler fishing boat got caught in high seas. Reports indicate that the boat, with four people aboard, capsized after being hit by a couple of large waves. All four people aboard went into the water.
A 68-foot pleasure yacht found the 22-foot fishing boat bobbing in the water and immediately raced over to help. The family aboard the yacht pulled two young men from the water. The two survivors were wearing life jackets and clung to the hull of the capsized vessel. The Coast Guard transported both men to a hospital. They were suffering from injuries and hypothermia.
The Police Aviation Dive Team from NYPD arrived to assist and located the captain of the vessel. He was removed from the water and driven to a hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly before noon. The captain of the boat was a 54-year-old man from Farmingdale.
Police described the missing man as a 65-year-old white male. He stood 5’ 10” tall, weighing 180 pounds, possibly wearing a life jacket, green sweatshirt, white boots, and fishing overalls called Grundens. Anyone possessing any knowledge of the incident is asked to call Nassau County PD.
