BROOKLYN, NY- According to pix11.com, a garbage truck hit a 78-year-old woman while she was attempting to cross the road at the intersection of 18thAvenue and East Fourth Street on Monday, May 14, 2018. The accident was witnessed by two officers from the New York Police Department. The officers offered immediate assistance to the insured woman and applied a tourniquet to her leg.
Witnesses said that the woman’s leg was crushed under the truck’s left wheel.
The victim was transported to the hospital where she has undergone surgery. She reportedly sustained severe, but not life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the garbage truck had been trying to make a left turn when he hit the woman. He stayed at the scene of the accident and according to witnesses, was given a breathalyzer test, which he passed. The truck was part of the private sanitation company, MIST Enterprise.
City records indicate that the Mist Enterprise truck involved in the accident has received five citations for running red lights since 2016. The company’s trucks have been involved in two crashes within the last two years that resulted in injuries.
New York City has been working to reduce the number of pedestrians killed in traffic accidents. The efforts have been largely successful as demonstrated by the fact that 2017 saw the lowest number of pedestrian fatalities in NYC since the city first started keeping records.
Accidents involving left turns cause about one-fourth of all pedestrian accidents. Part of the problem is the timing of lights. Vehicles turn left on a green light and cross the path of pedestrians who have a walk sign at the same time.
