The building’s first floor has businesses.
One person is reported to have suffered injuries in the fire. The injuries are not life-threatening.
Investigators are still looking into the cause of the fire.
In 2017, fire deaths in New York City increased by 50% following the record low number of fire deaths in the city in 2016. In 2017, 73 people were killed by fires in New York City. December of 2017 had more fire-related fatalities in the city than any other single month in decades.
The deadliest fire was caused by a child who had been playing with a stove.
More than half of the deadly fires occurred in locations where there were no functioning fire alarms.
The fire department has taken steps to educate the public and has started campaigns to distribute fire alarms across the city.
Throughout the country, 1,345,500 fires were reported in 2015. That number indicated a 19.1% drop from the number of fires in 2006. However, the number of fatalities, 3,280 in 2015, only indicated a 3% drop from 2006.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, the leading cause of fires in the United States is cooking equipment. Following cooking equipment, heating equipment, electrical and lighting equipment, intentional fires, and smoking materials are the other common causes of fires. While smoking materials cause only 5% of fires, these fires lead to 22% of fire-related fatalities.
