PARSIPPANY, NJ – According to Tapinto.net, a tour bus carrying 30 people traveling from New York City was involved in a deadly crash on Route 80. The bus struck a median and reportedly went airborne leading to a serious multi-vehicle collision.
Reports indicate that one person was killed, and two other individuals were seriously injured in the accident. More than 12 people were taken to the Morristown Medical Center for treatment.
The bus driver was entrapped in the vehicle.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) reports that in 2016, the most recent year recorded, the number of fatal accidents involving large buses and trucks rose by about 2 percent over the previous year. In total, there were 4,440 buses or trucks involved in deadly crashes in 2016. The number of deadly crashes peaked in 2005 when there were a reported 5,231 fatal accidents involving these vehicles. The numbers dropped to a low in 2009 before beginning to increase again.
Buses are involved in fewer fatal crashes than large trucks. In 2016, fatal truck crashes outnumbered bus crashes by large margins. There were 4,213 large truck crashes and 227 bus crashes.
All types of buses are involved in the data, and 13 percent of the crashes involved city buses, school buses accounted for about 40 percent, and transit buses were the cause of 34 percent of deadly bus accidents.
When it comes to bus safety, one issue that frequently comes up is whether buses would be safer if they were equipped with seatbelts. Many have argued that school buses, in particular, would not be made safer with seatbelts and that the cost of adding this safety measure would not be justified. Still, many safety advocates are working to improve bus safety by requiring seat belts.
