MTA Bus Accident Lawsuits

PROSPECT LEFFERTS GARDENS, BROOKLYN – A news article posted on abc7ny.com reports that at least fourteen MTA bus passengers were injured in a bus accident in Prospect Lefferts Gardens.  According to the news report, the bus driver lost control of the MTA bus, and the vehicle hopped up and onto a curb and then crashed into a building in Prospect Lefferts Gardens, Brooklyn, New York.

The MTA accident was reported by a resident who heard the collision from their apartment building located on 174 Lincoln Road at around 2 p.m.

The MTA is reporting that 14 people were on the MTA bus when the bus collided with the building.  The injured victims included 13 passengers and the bus driver.

According to the FDNY, all of the accident-related injuries were assumed to be non-life-threatening. All thirteen of the accident victims were taken to a local area hospital for medical treatment.

The B49 bus was heading south along Bedford Avenue when the MTA bus driver allegedly lost control of the bus, hopped a curb, and then collided with an unoccupied building.

The FDNY Deputy Chief, James Smithwick, stated that most of the injured passengers were able to walk out of the bus or the fire department.  Chief Smithwick also reported that their fire rescue crew checked the unoccupied building for any people who may have been trapped inside the unoccupied building.

Craig Cipriano, President of MTA Bus, stated the 55-year-old MTA bus driver has over 13 years of experience and was not serious injured.  Mr. Cipriano also stated that the MTA bus driver involved in the accident did not any major safety infractions on his record- only a few minor collisions.  According to Cipriano, the MTA bus accident investigation is ongoing and ruled out any mechanical defect as a cause of this accident.  Cipriano was asked about statements provided by witnesses claiming the bus driver’s foot was stuck on the accelerator.  Cipriano told reporters that MTA officials are going to look into those assertions during the investigation.

MTA officials said that speeding didn’t appear to be a factor in the accident.

Building inspectors and structural engineers from the Department of Buildings reported that the building’s structural stability had been compromised, and the building was no longer safe to occupy.

The building’s residents have been given emergency relocation assistance. The structural engineers received emergency work orders, and the building repairs are required before the MTA bus can be removed.

They were very helpful & extremely patient with my non-stop requests for clarification regarding certain things that I didn’t understand. The majority of my interactions were with Ashley & she was absolutely wonderful. She was knowledgeable, pleasant & always made it clear that I wasn’t a burden when I was asking her to once again explain something to me that she had already done at least one time in the past.
