Drugged driver arrested
LONG ISLAND, NY – According to Longisland.com, a driver was under the influence of drugs when he causes a head-on collision in Coram. The Suffolk County Police report that the suspect is now in custody.
Mr. Boyle, 28, or Manorville was operating a 1998 Mercury Marquis on Middle Country Road he veered over the road’s center line and into oncoming traffic. The Mercury struck a 2008 Honda head-on at about 9 in the evening. Another driver, traveling in a 2008 Chevrolet van then struck the back of the Honda.
Boyle was injured in the crash and was taken to the Stony Brook University Hospital where he received treatment. The driver’s injuries were said to be serious, but not life-threatening. No one else was hurt in the crash.
Police say that Boyle is suspected to have been under the influence of drugs when he caused the collision.
While drunk driving has been decreasing over the past few decades, the number of drivers who are under the influence of other types of drugs has been on the rise. Drugged driving creates complicated legal questions and challenges for police officers. While testing for alcohol impairment is a tried and true process involving reliable tests, there are many drugs that are processed in different ways by a person’s body. It can be difficult for officers to recognize the various signs of impairment, or to test and determine whether the driver is impaired by a drug at the time when they are pulled over or caused an accident. Some drugs remain in a person’s blood long after the effects have worn off and they are no longer impaired. Legalization of marijuana and the opioid epidemic are making these issues more common.
