BRONX, NY – According to the nydailynews.com, a couple injured in a four-vehicle chain reaction crash feel that they are fortunate to have survived the ordeal. The crash took place on the New England Thruway. The cause of the crash was a pair of intoxicated street racers who smashed into the couple’s vehicle.
Mrs. Carlos, 58, was lucky to have received few injuries in the terrible collision. Carlos said that people using drugs or alcohol “have to be careful with other people’s lives.” The victim said that the pair of reckless drivers could have killed someone. He remains puzzled over the possible reason for their actions, questioning if it was just “for fun.”
Mr. Carlos, 68, Norma’s husband, suffered critical injuries in the crash. Jorge was transported to the Jacobi Medical Center where he is still hospitalized for treatment of several injuries, including broken ribs, internal bleeding, and a fracture in his lower back. He also had to undergo surgery to remove his spleen.
Police arrested the drivers who were allegedly drunk and street racing in a pair of BMWs. The racing drivers rear-ended Carlos’s vehicle.
The drivers facing charges were identified as 23-year-old J. White and 31-year-old C. Coates. Both are facing reckless driving and DWI charges.
Norma says that she was unconscious from the impact and came to once paramedics were already on the scene. Norma described seeing her husband screaming and bleeding when responders took him into an ambulance. Jorge still has a tube in his mouth making it difficult for him to speak, but that he is conscious and able to understand what is happening around him.
