PELHAM MANOR, NEW YORK – A news report on lohud.com states that a Jeep Cherokee was parked at a gas pump at a BJ’s gas station and then suddenly accelerated, crash through some fencing, and then plunged more than 20 feet into the Eastchester Creek. The accident occurred at approximately eight in the morning. The accident tragically killed the driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by medical examiners.
According to Pelham Manor Police, local first responders conducted a search and rescue to see if the driver who is the only person inside of the motor vehicle. The woman was identified as a 63-year-old woman from Mount Vernon.
According to a witness, one law-enforcement officer jumped into The creek and attempted to save the female driver. According to that witness, the officer acted heroically and didn’t waste time attempting to save the woman’s life. The lawn Forssman officer attempted to save the woman’s life for over 25 minutes. However, it appeared that the woman’s doors were locked, and he was unsuccessful in the rescue attempt.
The SUV was submerged by the Fulton Avenue bridge. Mount Vernon deputy fire chief Edward Stephenson stated that the first firefighters and police to dive into the creek were unable to break the windows out on the vehicle. Also, The rescue was made difficult due to the murky water causing issues with disability.
Initially, it was reported that there was more than one person inside the sports utility vehicle, but that was untrue. The officer and three firefighters were later treated for minor injuries and were released.
