Head-On Collision in South Hampton Kills One

SOUTHAMPTON, LONG ISLAND, NY – Police say that a 20-year-old man from Flanders died in a head-on crash with a pickup driven by an 18-year-old male. The accident reportedly happened at approximately 7:00 a.m. according to the Riverhead News-Review. Police from Southampton as well as investigators from the New York State Police Accident Reconstruction unit continue to investigate the accident. Officers have not issued charges at this point in the investigation.

The young man who tragically passed away Tuesday in the head-on crash reportedly drove a Chevrolet Trailblazer sports utility vehicle on south Flanders Road in Hampton Bays. The young man who survived the collision drove a Ford Pickup truck northerly on Flanders Road. For reasons that officers have yet to determine, the two vehicles collided. The power behind the collision propelled the Trailblazer into the wooded area along the side of the road.

First responders raced to the scene to aid the victims. Officers said that when they arrived at the scene which was near the intersection with Bellows Pond Road, they found the driver of the Trailblazer unconscious and not responding to stimuli. The substantial damage to the driver’s side of the SUV trapped the driver inside. Emergency medical responders determined that the 20-year-old passed away from his injuries at the scene.

Photographs taken of the Trailblazer show the driver’s side front quarter completely caved in. The windshield is smashed, and the roof is folded down and into the passenger compartment. Newsday posted the photograph on its website. A picture posted by the Riverhead News-Review depicted the Trailblazer onboard a police flatbed truck.

The 18-year-old driver of the pickup truck is lucky to be alive. Authorities said he sustained minor, non-life-threatening injuries in the crash, who is reportedly from East Hampton. This tragic case remains under investigation with Southampton Police and State Police.
