Honda caught on fire
NEW YORK, NY – According to the gothamist.com, the driver who caused an accident in Tribeca was driving at 100 miles per hour when he struck another vehicle, killing the driver. The driver, 37-year-old Sherman Harrison, is now facing several charges for the incident. Courtney Groves, the Assistant District Attorney, said that the tragic incident was the result of Harrison’s “inexplicable recklessness.”
The crash took place at about 7 in the morning when Harrison’s speeding Audi struck a Honda CRV flipping the other vehicle. Honda then caught on fire, and the driver, Amy Phillipson, was killed.
Harrison did not stop but continued to travel northbound on West Street and to hit a Toyota pickup truck, causing that vehicle to then strike a Hyundai sedan. The driver of the Hyundai and the driver of the pickup truck were both hospitalized for injuries they suffered in the crash.
Reports indicate that Harrison then attempted to flee the crash scene on foot with his Rottweiler. Officers soon caught the defendant, and he was transported to Bellevue Hospital and then charged with “manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident.”
Police reports indicate that Harrison had run through three red traffic lights before he caused the crash. A loaded .40-caliber Glock was found in his Audi.
During the arraignment, which was done on a closed-circuit camera as Harrison is still in the hospital, Harrison reportedly had several outbursts and was at times incoherent. Harrison’s attorney suggested that the defendant was in need of an “intensive mental health program.”
The victim was on her way to work at the time of the crash.
