NYC Crack’s Down on Drunk Driving
NEW YORK CITY, NY – According to an online news report posted on abc7ny.com, the New York City Police Department and the Department of Transportation have implemented new initiatives to crack down on speeding and drunk driving. The NYPD and DOT have joined forces with the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and TLC to improve the Vision Zero program.
According to NYPD Chief of Transportation Kim Royster, all NYPD traffic safety tools will be used collectively to ensure pedestrians, cyclists, and travelers can safely travel through New York City. Moreover, there will be additional police officers present to cite speeders and make DWI arrests into New Year’s Day. DOT speed cameras will also be used to catch speeders.
Additionally, city agencies reported on a new safety campaign concerning cannabis. Although possession of marijuana is legal, it remains illegal to drive while under the influence of marijuana. Marijuana affects reaction time, distorts perception, and impairs coordination. There were no details provided about how the new cannabis safety campaign would operate.
Speed cameras will also be expanded to assist in law enforcement. The speed cameras that are currently set up in school zones have deterred speeding by around 70%. Last year, over 505% of the drivers who received a speeding violation did not receive a second speeding violation.
The DOT is looking to expand the service hours of those cameras and place additional cameras throughout the city.
According to the DOT, one-third of traffic fatalities in 2021 occurred within school speed zones but outside of the cameras’ service hours. A new bill that would allow the cameras to be online 24/7 has been introduced by Assemblymember Deborah Glick and State Senator Andrew Gounardes.
