A Man Died In A Single Car Crash. A man from Port Jefferson Station, New York, died early Wednesday morning in a single-car crash on the Northern State Parkway, when he was on the way to the East Meadow Fire Department, state police said.
Pasquale Aiello, 81, did maintenance work at the firehouse. He was driving west on the Northern State Parkwayjust before 5 a.m. when he lost control of his Nissan Altima and struck a tree near Exit 42 in Dix Hills, state police told Newsday. Aiello was pronounced dead at the scene. Road conditions were not believed to be a factor in the crash, though police continue to investigate the cause.
Firefighters from the nearby Dix Hills department responded to the crash. They alerted the East Meadow department after seeing East Meadow department stickers and a blue light on Aiello’s dashboard. Aiello usually arrived at the East Meadow firehouse around 6 a.m. He was often the first to arrive.
Gary Nauth, an East Meadow firefighter, said Aiello rarely took time off. He worked full time doing maintenance since retiring as a New York City sanitation foreman about 20 years ago, according to Newsday.
Aiello, his wife, Mary, and their three daughters moved to East Meadow in the 1970s. He joined the fire department and eventually rose to the rank of rescue captain. He was a lifetime member of Ladder Co. No. 1.
