Driver alcohol detection systems

USA- Lifesly.com writes that campaigns to end drunk driving cost millions. While the efforts have cut down on this dangerous practice, they have not been able to do enough as people still die every day in crashes caused by drunk motorists.

Now technology may join the fight against drunk drivers, and it could make a massive change in road safety. Some claim that by 2024, vehicle technology could completely eliminate the practice of drunk driving.

To illustrate the scope of the problem, in 2018, 10,511 people lost their lives in crashes caused by a driver who was under the influence of alcohol. In total, 29 percent of people killed in crashes that year died in alcohol-related wrecks. When compared to 1985, when 41 percent of the total number of deadly accidents were the result of drunk drivers, leading to 18,125 fatalities, it is clear that there is an improvement. However, more than 10,000 preventable deaths are plainly unacceptable.

Now systems in cars could put an end to impaired driving and save thousands of more lives.  Driver Alcohol Detection Systems, or “DADDS,” include various types of technology that detect drunk drivers. One is a facial monitoring system, which is mounted as a camera that monitors the driver’s face. This technology could detect whether the person is drunk or drowsy, and it will issue a warning and alert the driver with voice technology and by tightening their seatbelt.

Another system uses 360-degree sensors to detect when a driver is under the influence or distracted. Through the use of high sensitivity alcohol sensors, these cars could detect alcohol in the oil of a person’s skin and take control over the car and make it immovable.

Touch starts in cars could also be equipped to detect alcohol by analyzing the capillaries in a person’s skin. If the person is drunk, the car will not start. A breath-based system could also work similarly and detect alcohol when the driver exhales. These systems are all possible in the near future.
