MIDDLE ISLAND, NY- According to Patch.com, police have released the identities of three people who were killed in a traffic accident on Long Island. The victims were 74-year-old Mr. Weingarten, 71-year-old Mrs. Weingarten, and 19-year-old Mr. Belford.
According to the police, a grey 2015 Nissan Rogue ran through a stop sign and was driving recklessly at about 11:45 at night. The Nissan had previously been reported as stolen. An officer tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver Mr. Belford, 17, tried to evade the officer. The officer then pursued the Nissan and called for backup. The Nissan was driving west and hit a 2009 Honda CRV that was trying to make a left turn.
Mr. and Mrs. Weingarten, who were married, were traveling in the Honda. They both died in the crash. Angelo Belford was the driver of the Nissan’s brother. Angelo was also killed in the collision.
Nahriek and another person who was in the Nissan at the time of the accident were both injured in the collision and taken to the Stony Brook University Hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.
Nahriek is facing charges in relation to the crash. The investigation is still ongoing.
Police chases are often controversial because drivers who try to flee from officers often put innocent bystanders at risk. In many cases, the suspect being chased is guilty of only a minor offense, and the car chase is much more of an immediate hazard to the public than the suspect does. Many departments have strict policies limiting the scenarios in which an officer can engage in a vehicle pursuit of a fleeing suspect as a way to prevent tragic accidents.
