Car Accident Safety Tips

A news story published on howstuffworks.com says roadways and motor vehicles are much safer due to driver education and technology. Up until 2021, the number of fatal traffic accidents had been falling. Recently, there has been a substantial rise in deadly crashes due to spikes in reckless driving, speeding, and drunk driving. The following are some important safety tips that may help keep you and your families safe.

Drive Defensively – Defensive drivers “yield to other drivers.” For example, if you are driving on the highway and a truck wants to merge ahead of you and into your traffic lane, a defensive driving strategy is to slow down or change lanes. This will allow the merging truck to safely enter the interstate. In other words, defensive driving means that a driver watches out for every other motorist to avoid an accident. Defensive driving also can prevent road rage incidents.

Wear a Seatbelt – Seatbelts save thousands of lives every single year. In general, most people do not understand how life-saving seatbelts are during a motor vehicle accident. Also, some people incorrectly assume that seatbelts only prevent passengers from hitting their heads on the dashboard, front seats, or steering wheels. However, seatbelts prevent passengers from being thrown from a motor vehicle that crashes and begins to roll over. Rollover accidents are common, and passengers are usually thrown from the vehicle and killed when they are not wearing a seatbelt.

Maintain Your Car – A lot of motor vehicle accidents happen as a result of improperly maintained motor vehicles. It is very important that you keep your motor vehicle in top condition. About seven percent of all accidents are caused by poorly maintained vehicles. Improperly maintained cars can lead to accidents caused by tire failures, brake failures, engine failures, steering issues, and many different accidents.

Maintain Your Distance – You can greatly reduce your accident risks by maintaining a proper distance from motor vehicles ahead of your car. Rear-end collisions are dangerous, and they are also one of the most common types of crashes. These types of car accidents are normally avoidable by just creating more distance between your car and the vehicles in front of you. Allow at least one car length per 10 MPH you are traveling. So, if you are traveling at 50 miles per hour, you should keep at least five car lengths away from the vehicle in front of you.
