Scaffolding accident
MANHATTAN, N.Y. — A construction worker was killed, and three coworkers were seriously injured by falling debris last Thursday while working with three other employees on the façade of a building located at 136 E. 36th Street. A piece of the parapet from the building’s roof fell onto the scaffolding while the deceased man and his coworkers were on it. The scaffolding gave way under the weight of the debris which rained down upon it. The article featured in the New York Daily News indicated that 136 E. 36th Street is a twelve-story condominium building. The 59-year-old grandfather who died had premonitions that something bad would happen on the job site, according to his family.
The step-daughter of the 59-year-old construction worker killed last Thursday said that her step-father had a premonition that something was wrong at his job site. He was nervous about going to work out of fear that something bad might happen while he was his crew was repairing the façade of the condo. Although the man’s wife told him to stay home because of his eerie feeling, he went to work anyway out of obligation to his family.
The family is understandably heartbroken after the loss of their husband, father, step-father, and grandfather. They said that detectives from the New York City Police Department called them around 7:40 p.m. and told them what happened. They were immediately in shock and disbelief. Even now, they are having a hard time expressing the depths of their grief. One of his daughters said that she wants to go to the morgue, slap him, and tell him to wake up so they could all go home again.
One of the man’s coworkers praised his friend for being a hero. The coworker said that his friend was always available to lend a hand when people needed it. He was the primary income source for the family. His wife developed COVID-19 and asked him to live at a friend’s house so he would not get sick and could continue working.
