Five construction workers injured
MANHATTAN, New York — Five construction workers sustained varying degrees of injury when a box truck careened into the back of a flatbed truck used by the construction crew. The construction workers were working on the eastbound section of the RFK Bridge in Manhattan Saturday morning, according to the Daily News. Two of the construction workers were trapped between the flatbed truck and the bridge’s retaining wall. Two other construction workers were on the flatbed portion of their vehicle and flew into the roadway. The female driver of the flatbed truck was also injured in the crash. The driver of the box truck did not appear to be injured after the collision. NYPD officers have not filed any charges at this time.
One construction worker is struggling to survive in critical condition, and another worker is in serious condition after they were thrown to the pavement by the impact of a box truck into their flatbed truck. The 44-year-old construction worker listed in critical condition and the 55-year-old worker listed in serious condition were both transported by NY EMS to Elmhurst Hospital in Harlem. The 38-year-old female driver of the flatbed, along with two other construction workers, were also hurt in the crash. The three other construction workers injured in the crash also received treatment at Elmhurst Hospital.
NYPD investigators say that the box truck, operated by a 25-year-old man working for a moving company, collided with the flatbed truck just as the construction workers were about to begin their daily work.
NYPD said that they pinpointed the location of the crash on the Queens-bound side of the RFK bridge, a short distance from the Randall’s Island exit. The 911 call reporting the crash came into emergency services around 8 a.m.
NYPD investigators are still working the case and have not charged the driver of the moving van with any offenses at this time. The police did not provide any preliminary information as to how the accident happened.
