October 12, 2011: CooperVision has stepped up its efforts to recall more than 500,000 Avaira Toric contact lenses under pressure from federal health regulators. The company announced it second recall announcement after reports of torn corneas, blurred vision and other eye problems. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration said Tuesday that a larger effort was needed to alert consumers to the defective contact lenses.

CooperVision initiated a voluntary U.S. recall of what the company called “a limited number of lots” of the Avaira Toric contact lenses on August 19, 2011, amounting to approximately 10% of the Avaaira Toric lenses sold or issued as samples in the past year and on Augus5, 2011, CooperVision notified the FDA of the recall.
