Asbestos found in makeup
U.S.A.- Cbsnews.com writes that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has found asbestos in certain makeup products sold at Claire’s and Beauty Plus Global. According to the World Health Organization, there is “no safe level of exposure to asbestos.” Asbestos is known to cause cancer, including mesothelioma, a rare and deadly disease, and other types of lung cancer.
The companies both issued recalls after the FDA finding came out. Certain batches of the Beauty Plus Global Contour Effects Pallette 2 and the Claire’s JoJo Siwa Makeup Set were both subject to the recall. Just three months ago, the FDA issued another recall of Claire’s makeup products after finding that they were contaminated with asbestos. The chain, which sells accessories and makeup to young girls, came under scrutiny in 2017 after the United States Public Interest Research Group reported that it found what it referred to as “high levels of asbestos” in three products sold at Claire’s.
The asbestos was found in the eye shadow sold as part of the JoJo Siwa Cosmetic Kit.
While asbestos is banned in Canada, the European Union, the U.K., and the Unites States have not yet banned the mineral for all uses.
In the United States, the government’s role in the regulation of cosmetics is extremely limited. When the FDA finds that there is a problem with a cosmetic product, such as makeup, it can recommend a recall, but not issue one itself.
Additionally, cosmetics manufacturers are not required to inform the FDA of consumer complaints. However, consumers can report problems to the FDA in addition to the manufacturer.
Starting in 2004, the FDA created the Adverse Event Reporting System in order to make it easier for consumers to report adverse reactions to products such as cosmetics.
